Alter-Economic Experiments

Workshop Series: “Reowning our Conflicts”
Developed and led by Restive, this workshop is intended to help participants build capacity for relational repair within their respective communities through an emergent study of restorative systems and practices. These locally-defined systems allow members to avoid punitive logics, ask for support, facilitate practices for each other, and be seen in their humanity and deeply listened to before taking responsibility for their actions. A 6-week iteration of the series was hosted at La Cite-des-Hospitalieres in fall 2024 to support VC Residents and friends experiencing conflict.

Noviciat Membership Model
The Noviciat is a nonprofit co-working space at La Cite-des-Hospitalieres with a unique, inclusive spatial access model. After managing entity Entremise initially proposed individual subscriptions, the Value Collective Development Crew proposed a membership model to accommodate loose collectives with less financial resources and more sporadic spatial usage, based on the needs and patterns of usage of Value Collective Residents.

VCI Pay Formula
VCI is a pay formula developed by the Value Collective Development Crew (VCDC) to help the team make the most of their budget in concert with intrinsic motivations. Rather than tracking hours spent, members of VCDC were prompted to input their personal budget for variable 1 and values between 1-10 for variables 2-4. Salaries were calculated weekly, enabling members to work less some weeks, and more others. The final number is calculated relative to those of fellow members and the budget ceiling for that month.

VC Time Bank
The VC Time Bank was an analog time bank installed in the Noviciat co-working space at La Cite-des-Hospitalieres by the Value Collective Development Crew (VCDC). Throughout spring 2022, anyone could join by creating a profile and placing it in the accompanying directory. A classifieds board allowed people to post and answer requests. VCDC also engaged visitors to the space with a timebanking game, sparking reflections on economics with members of the public.

Co-Value Currency
The co-value is a speculative currency to count time spent on collectively-valued endeavours. This currency would be defined, earned and traded by people residing in definancialized housing stock (such as housing cooperatives, social housing or land trusts) in place of traditional rent payment. Paper notes and a proposal document were created and shared by the Value Collective Development Crew as a conversation starter about alter-economics.
